GRANUM, Alberta — A fatal collision near the community of Granum has claimed the lives of two people and prompted an investigation by the RCMP.

According to police, the crash occurred on Highway 2 near the intersection with Highway 519, just north of Granum. Authorities say a passenger vehicle was attempting to turn east onto Highway 519 when it was struck by a northbound semi-truck travelling along Highway 2.

Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after the collision was reported. The two occupants of the passenger vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck sustained minor injuries and was treated following the crash.

RCMP investigators remained at the location for several hours as they worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. Preliminary findings indicate that neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have been factors in the crash, though the investigation remains ongoing.

The incident caused significant traffic disruptions along Highway 2 while emergency personnel secured the area and gathered evidence. Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes as crews worked at the scene.

The fatal collision marks another serious crash along the Highway 2 corridor in southern Alberta, raising renewed concerns about safety at major highway intersections throughout the region.

Police have not yet released the identities of the victims pending notification of next of kin. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information that could assist investigators is encouraged to contact the RCMP.

The investigation remains active, and additional details are expected to be released as they become available.
